The Bright Speech Way

Eating sustains life and connects us to others. Daily gatherings with our loved ones often include food and drinks. Comfort foods provide familiarity and respite during tough times. Cultural foods remind us of our heritage. But what happens when eating becomes difficult or painful?

At Bright Speech, we consider both scientific evidence and quality of life to help you manage your swallowing impairments. Goals vary based on your individual needs, but our focus remains the same. We will do everything we can to help you regain your place at the table, savoring meal times with your loved ones once again.

Evaluation & Treatment

Your care starts with a comprehensive evaluation of your swallowing abilities. During this evaluation, you can express any concerns you have, no matter how small they may seem. I’ll assess sensory abilities, strength and movement of your oral structures, as well as your cough strength. The ability to cough is crucial for protecting the airway, making it an essential part of your assessment.

You’ll play an active role in the treatment process. I’ll present you with treatment options tailored to your needs and provide information about their advantages and disadvantages. This empowers you to make informed decisions about your care.

Specialty Interventions

  • If your swallowing problem causes food and liquids to enter your airway, you’ll need a strong cough to expel them. This intervention will teach you how to use a special device with a specific protocol to improve your cough over time.

  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation involves placing electrodes over target swallowing muscles to send gentle impulses to the nerves within them. This stimulation can enhance the effectiveness of traditional swallowing exercises that you complete during therapy.

  • Swallowing involves both sensory and motor components. We will identify and then incorporate sensory enhancers that can support your swallowing skills. Learn how to use these sensory boosters at home to improve your swallowing during meals.

  • Are you worried about your swallowing so much that you’re unsure where to start? Foods and drinks vary in difficulty, from easy to swallow to challenging. We’ll begin at a level that you can handle best and then progress based on your tolerance.
